Welcome to A Festival of Postcards.

The theme for this festival is Wheels.

I recently took a box of family photos from my Mom for scanning. Among the photos were a bunch of postcards from when my Great Grandpa was a young man. When I read about the new carnival “A Festival of Postcards” I knew that I would have one that worked. There are several postcards but only a few that have been mailed.

This postcard has a photo of the Garage and Blacksmith shop in Montezuma, Kansas which was owned by my Great Grandpa, Raymond Edwin Campbell (b. 1891), at the time. He was 23 years old at the time.

Garage and Blacksmithing, Montezuma, KS

Most of the people in the photograph are family members.

From left to right: George Campbell, b. 1897; Mary Magdaline (Maude) Ketch Campbell, b. 1870; Elmer Ellsworth Campbell, b. 1862; unknown child; unknown face; unknown man.

The other faces will be matched with names as I compare them to other photos of the time period.

This postcard was sent by Raymond Edwin Campbell to his younger brother, George Campbell, in Dexter, Kansas.  The postcard is in his handwriting and was sent from Montezuma, Kansas on 23 Mar 1914 and postage cost 1 cent.

Gene Kelly and Julie Andrews are two of my favorite Actors! My sister sent me a link to the Family Tree skit from The Julie Andrews Show which originally aired in 1965. I loved it and thought I would share. It’s a bit long and in 2 videos but if you’re fans of Julie and Gene, you’ll enjoy it. I promise! WordPress is not letting me embed the video in this post so you will have to go to Youtube to watch it yourself. It’s worth it though! I promise!

Family Tree part 1
Family Tree part 2

Gravestone, Catherine (Burrow) Winn

Catharine Burrow is my Third Great Grandmother. She was born in 1812 in New York. (There is information that shows that she was born in Oct 1812 in Delaware County, New York. I have not yet had the opportunity to verify the sources.)

She married William Bray Winn, date and location unknown.

Catharine died on 4 March 1883 and is buried in the Shelby Cemetery, Shelby, Iowa.

The Gravestone reads:

Catharine
wife of
W. B. Winn
died
4 Mar. 1883
aged 71 years and
5 months

Gravestone, Clara Wagar

Clara Wagar is my Second Great Grandmother. She was born to Stephan Wagar and Susana Holmes on 22 March 1866* in Constantine, Michigan.

Clara married Frank Palmer on 4 March 1888 in Three Rivers, Michigan. Frank was born on 9 July 1866 in Constantine, Michigan to James Palmer and Sarah Powers. Frank died on 17 March 1891 in Three Rivers, Michigan from an eye infection.

Clara married Aaron Major (Mage) Milliman on 7 January 1894 in Three Rivers, Michigan.

Clara died on 22 Dec 1939 in Litchfield, Michigan.

She is buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Three Rivers, Michigan next to her first husband, Frank.

The gravestone reads:

Mother
Clara Wagar
Milliman
1865* – 1939
*According to Clara’s Marriage Certificates to Frank and Mage, she was born in 1866. I believe that date to be more correct than the date on her gravestone.

Frank Palmer's Tombstone

Frank J. Palmer is my second Great Grandfather. He was born to James Palmer and Sarah Powers on 9 Jul 1865 in Constantine, St. Joseph, Michigan.

He married Clara Wagar on 4 Mar 1988 in Three Rivers, St. Joseph, Michigan. Clara was born 22 Mar 1866 in Constantine, St. Joseph, Michigan to Stephen Wagar and Susana Holmes.

Frank died on 17 Mar 1891 in Three Rivers, St. Joseph, Michigan from an eye infection.

He was 25 years old when he died and he left behind a 2 year old son and a wife who was 25 weeks pregnant (assuming a 40 week pregnancy).

Frank is buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Three Rivers, Michigan.

The gravestone reads:

Frank J Palmer
July 9, 1865 – March 17, 1891

Craig at Geneablogie started a surname meme. He says:

List the surnames you are researching and the general localities. Then tell the names of your “Most Wanted Ancestors,” that is, the ones you most want to find behind that brickwall.

Thomas at Destination: Austin Family suggested:
